"If you have never been to "Aida" at the Mariinsky - your life cannot be called happy. Oleksandr Gurets, a soloist of the National Opera of Ukraine, was announced as Radames, and his performance became a real sensation! We honestly admit that it has not been possible to hear a tenor of this level in the walls of the Mariinsky Theater for the past few years. A well-focused, flying sound, a rich juicy timbre of the voice over the entire range (reminiscent of the timbre of Pavarotti), excellent bel canto technique, artistic freedom - these are the main qualities that captivated the St. Petersburg audience. And if, after the first brilliantly performed aria ("Celeste Aida"; "Sweet Aida"), the last note of which the singer effectively cut into pianissimo, the hall "only" exploded with applause, then after the third act the theater drowned in prolonged applause and shouts of "bravo" . For a moment it seemed that we were not in the "Venice of the North", as the former Leningrad is often called, but in the real, southern one - the grateful public raged in such a southern way".Christich S.
